Hey my Galant has an annoying squeal it makes when i do a full lock, I'm guessing my power steering belt is loose, but i'm not sure which belt operates the power steering as there are 2 belts next to each other. Scion . Why Do Car Batteries Die in the Winter?There are few things worse than discovering your car battery is dead on an ice cold morning. A number of factors can conspire to slowly wear down your car battery during the cold winter months. While the physical properties of your battery are affected by cold weather, you might be surprised to learn that your driving habits play a crucial role in keeping your battery charged. Cooling Effect According to Battery Council International: When the outside temperature is 80 F, a fully-charged battery has 100 percent of its power available to start the car. When the temperature drops to 32 F, a fully-charged battery has two-thirds of its power available. At 0 F, that same fully-charged battery has only 40 percent of its power available to start the vehicle. Physical Factors Your car's alternator is responsible for charging the battery. For your battery to receive a full charge, it requires current from the alternator for a prolonged period, preferably at a warm temperature. When driving during the cold season, we use the defroster for the windshield, the heater to warm us up, and since the days are shorter, we use our headlights more often. All of these accessories divert current away from the battery, leaving a deficit after each trip. Driving Habits Most of us spend less time driving during the winter, and the trips we do make tend to be shorter. These short trips do not give the battery time to warm up, making it unable to store much of the charge sent from the alternator. Keeping it Charged There are a few things you can do to prevent battery failure during the winter. If you have a garage, keep your car in it at night to protect against the cold. Keep your battery terminals tight to their posts, and free of corrosion. Limit your use of accessories when driving. If your battery struggles to turn over the motor, bring the battery into a warm location and put it on a charger overnight. Caution It might not be your battery's fault. Adverse winter weather conditions cause more stress on the battery, coolant, engine oil and other components and fluids that are designed to operate under better conditions. Preparing your car properly for winter will help ensure it starts no matter what the weather is like. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Block heater Coolant Winter washer fluid Battery charger Battery booster Step by Step : 1 Have a block heater installed on your car if you do not have the luxury of a heated garage--starting a car in a controlled environment offers you the best chance of successful ignition. A block heater is an electrical box designed to warm the engine block. An electrical outlet plugs into an exterior grade extension cord and keeps the engine oil, coolant and battery warm. They cost a little bit of money, but the dividends they pay to ensure you can get to where you need to be is priceless. 2 Have the battery checked before the weather turns bad. Your battery requires more cold cranking amps--required to crack the starter against the flywheel and turn the engine over--in the winter than it does during any other time of year. Although only a couple hundred cold cranking amps are required to start almost any engine during warm or cool weather, a compromised battery at the low end of its output will be severely tested and can easily fail. 3 Have your alternator and electrical system tested by a local repair shop while you're having the battery checked. Many handheld battery testers at repair shops go beyond just checking the battery. They can determine if there is a problem in the electrical system, and although they might not be able to condemn the alternator, they can determine if something other than the battery is causing a deficiency on the starting or electrical system. An alternator is designed to restore amps to the battery but will not fully recharge the battery once it's operating. 4 Have the antifreeze checked for both pH balance and temperature. People who live in regions of severe winter weather often have the habit of adding straight antifreeze. This can lessen its effectiveness as much as too little concentrated antifreeze. An equal mix of water and antifreeze will properly assure the correct pH balance and temperature required for the car. Many cars call for a certain grade antifreeze, and it's important that the right type is being used. Refer to the fluid specifications chart in the owners manual. 5 Add isopropyl alcohol or use winter grade windshield washer fluid to the washer reservoir. You need windshield washer fluid most in the winter, and summer grade fluid will freeze solid and render the washer inoperable. Although this might not seem as important as starting your car, there's nothing more dangerous than driving when you cannot see properly. Have the wipers checked for cracks or rips while you're at it and replace them if necessary. 6 Use an alcohol grade dry gas product for your car. Most cars today are fuel-injected, and some might claim adding dry gas is unnecessary. But extreme cold and warming will still cause condensation in the fuel lines and fuel system. There are products to comply with fuel injected systems that can be used safely and effectively. Read the labels of the dry gas before purchasing to ensure it is correct for your car and will not harm the fuel injectors. 7 Start the car as usual by turning the ignition key. It might be sluggish if really cold, but a block heater or a car parked in a controlled environment will rarely give you problems. If neither are available and the engine will not turn over, applying a battery charger or battery booster might help assist the battery with the necessary cold cranking amps required to started the engine. 8 Allow time between unsuccessful starts for the starter to cool down. Repeatedly trying to crank an engine will rapidly heat up the starter and can easily compromise its function. In cold weather, it won't take long for the starter to cool down, but continuously cranking it can easily overheat and damage it. 9 Step on the gas pedal once or twice to inject fuel into the injectors if you're still unsuccessful. Although not required for fuel-injected vehicles, allowing some fuel into the injectors may help turn the car over. Do not continuously depress the accelerator, or you can easily flood the injectors and render a successful ignition difficult or impossible. However, if you drive under .Chapter 19: Checking Your Tires, Alignment, and Steering extreme conditions, you may want to check out tires designed for them: If it rains a lot, look for rain tires with super-wide grooves in the treads. For places with lots of snow or icy hills, look for "M+S" (mud and snow) on the sidewall. Do you drive mostly in local stop-and-go traffic, with many turns? Softer tires with wider treads will suit you best. How long do you intend to keep your car? Putting a pair of expensive tires on a vehicle that you intend to get rid of in 10,000 or 20,000 miles is foolish. Oh, it's possible to put well over 100,000 miles on a vehicle — especially if you maintain it properly — but if you have a relatively old vehicle with many miles on it already, and you don't intend to keep it very long, I wouldn't buy a pair of expensive mega-mile tires for it. Your car may surprise you and outlive its tires, but chances are that it won't. Similarly, it's foolish to put high-performance tires on a vehicle that will be driven mostly at normal speeds in city and highway traffic. On the other hand, if you intend to keep your vehicle for a few years, you'll save money in the long run by opting for more expensive, longer-lasting tires than "cheapos" or tires rated for less than 40,000 miles. Cheap tires wear out more quickly and cost more in the long run if you figure in the cost of buying, mounting, and balancing that second set. What's more, if you suffer a blowout or your tires fail to grip the road, you'll pay a great deal more if your vehicle — or you — is injured. If you drive only a couple of thousand miles a year, don't expect a pair of 40,000-mile radials to last forever. Rubber treads tend to rot eventually because of the ozone in the air, which causes cracks and hard spots in the sidewalls — a condition called ozone checking. For this reason, if you've used your tires for more than 40,000 miles, even if the treads are in good shape, have the tires checked to make sure that deteriorating rubber hasn't made them prone to blowouts and leaks. In addition to knowing which kind of tire is best for your car and understanding the tire codes (explained in the section called "The Secrets on Your Sidewalls, Revealed!"), keep the following tips in mind when you shop for tires: V You can find the proper tire size for your car in the owner's manual or on a sticker affixed to the vehicle.
